What can we do for Our Country

John Kennedy January 20, 1961

"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

Barack Obama

"Ask what your country can do for you; not what you can do for your country."

In essence the State of the Union address last night 02-12-2013 was about what your country can and will do for you. Not what you should be doing for your country. The United States is able to do many things - but it does not have a bottomless pit of resources to give out to its citizens or the world. We have to handle our limited resources as best as we can. Our government does not have the ability to distribute the limited resources available better than the free market.

Bruce Poliguin speaks at the Knox County Republican Party Meeting

Bruce Poliquin was the guest speaker at tonight’s Knox County Republican Party meeting. He focused on the budget battle and what we as a state are up against in trying to balance the states books.

Although things are better than they were four years or even two years ago. We are not out of the woods yet and still have major problems ahead to tackle. Bruce told the crowd of listeners that Maine for this budget still has a shortfall of $100 million that needs to be closed. It was explained how this was going to be accomplished.

Bruce explained how the Federal Government is borrowing for $16 trillion dollars. While the interest now is low it now consumes 40% of what we borrow. The worry is what will happen when those rates start to rise. This will affect Maine and how the state will be able to handle its budget. Because when rates rise for the Federal Government the services that will be squeezed out will be passed along to the states. Maine which is in a budget crisis as a result of spending beyond our means will have to make drastic cuts in order to balance what it spends with what is taken in.

For the next budgetary cycle starting mid July 2013 and running to July 2015 the state is facing a $800 million shortfall. How do we close this gap – where are the problems. Some of the areas that Bruce talked about were uncomfortable but needed to be addressed.
  1. Medicare is a huge problem. Federal reimbursement to the state is only $0.63 this is down from $0.73. Payments still have to be maintained to Hospitals. The state has balanced this portion of the budget in the past by not paying what was owed. To date the state owes for $480 million to the states hospitals.
  2. Revenue sharing will be reduced to 0% for this two year period (currently at 3.5%). There has been a 123% increase in property tax and it is expected there will be further rises. The state has no money for this program and towns have become dependent on this money to cover shortfalls. The money is drying up for the state and as a result money is drying up for towns from the state.
  3. School budgets are closely related to revenue sharing and represents a huge portion of any towns budget. Instead of looking for cost efficiencies towns will often vote on increasing budgets. Yet it was pointed out that budgets do not have to be passed all because they have been proposed. Bruce and members of the audience related stories of voting against budget increases. It requires grassroots action to do this. It was also recommended that we ask our superintendent of schools if they are purchasing insurance independently as example.

The point of these examples is that in the past we spent more than we took in.  That the state relied on creative accounting to push off to the future what it could not pay for today. That we relied on Federal stimulus money to help cover other debts and program expansions. That creative accounting and stimulus money has either gone away or dried up and the state is faced with some hard decisions. It has only been recently that Augusta has had a backbone in trying to accomplish this difficult task. There is going to be huge debates on the budget in the up coming weeks. The legislature is going to try and kill tax breaks as a way to counter the hard choices the Governor is suggesting. It is agreed that everyone is going to be affected but how the citizens will be impacted is going to depend on how the budget is passed. The Governor is trying to pass it so that it will have a minimal of impact on everyone. The worry is that special interest groups will start to carve out areas to protect so that in the end the burden will fall on fewer and fewer people. Let your representative know that it is time to get our house in order and work with the Governor.

I was channeling Republican Mitt Romney – Obama is quoted – or was he?

At a campaign speech given at Kent State University on Wednesday September 26, 2012 President Obama was quoted as saying that he was in favor of outsourcing US jobs. It was quickly stated that the President had misspoke. Or did he?

The fact that the President's policies of higher taxation and regulation, of Obama care and blocking aspects of energy production is forcing the exportation of US jobs. Exactly what he had accused Romney of doing.
Take the following outsourcing examples:
  1. Fisker – the electric-car company was to use part of its $529 million federal stimulus loan guarantee to build a manufacturing facility. This facility was going to create and support 500 or so jobs. The plant was built in Finland instead of in Delaware.
  2. GM who is owned by the US taxpayer is required to share the taxpayer-subsidized technology it has created with our competitors in China. This is considered the cost of doing business with China.
  3. GM has also agreed to giving the technology that goes into every Cadillac to its competitor and partner in China
  4. China was allowed to place a 30% tariff on excavators made by Caterpillar and other US heavy equipment manufacturers. This forced these companies to build plants in China. Part of the cost was giving away the technology behind the machinery.

Since 2010 the US has been exporting an estimated 30,000 middle class jobs to China and other countries - per month.  Is it any wonder that we – as a nation – have seen the disintegration of middle class families? The policies that Obama supports is making it more expensive for US firms to do business in the US. Other nations are more than willing to take those jobs from us.

Is this whats coming to America?

There is growing anger being displayed in Europe over austerity measures. People are upset with spending cuts by various governments and the threat of increased taxes.

There are budget crisis and governments no longer have the resources needed to cover the expenses associated with years of very generous entitlements. The protests that we are witnessing are coming about because many that will be impacted claim their livelihoods will be compromised by these changes. Unions are showing solidarity with the protesters - often encouraging them. They claim the protests are necessary to show the scale of opposition to these austerity measures. Governments are feeling the squeeze between what they know has to happen and what the protesters are demanding. There is not a lot of room to maneuver.

Is this what we can expect to happen here in America? Today we find ourselves on the edge of a cliff - teetering one way or another. Come January America will either fall over the cliff or get pulled back. In either case we as a country will find ourselves having to make some very unpleasant decisions. We run the very real risk of taking the path that Europe is going down. We cannot, though, continue upon the path that we find ourselves on. Raising taxes and cutting back so that we can live within our means is the only way to get us out of the hole we are slipping into.

There are going to be some very tough decisions that our leaders will be making. Decisions that will affect the entitlements that many in this country have become dependent upon. Pensions that can not be funded in the manner that they once were. There seems to be three options available to us:

1. Raise taxes on those that are still paying taxes. Do this across the board. There should not be any segment that gets a free ride. Raising taxes will in theory keep the entitlements that are out there and would cause the least harm to those receiving them.

2. Raise taxes and reduce entitlements. Do this across the board. As above no segment of society should get a free ride. Everyone will feel the pain.

3. Raise taxes, reduce entitlements and encourage job growth. The idea of getting more people on a payroll and paying taxes means in theory that taxes would not have to be raised as much and entitlements would not have to be reduced as much.

There are many ideas that could work - what is not working are the current ideas because it is only delaying what is inevitable - what we are seeing in Europe. If that is what this country wants then I suspect we will be seeing it soon. America is not like this - I hope

There is an image problem for the GOP – Grand Old Party – and that in itself is part of the problem.

Republicans took a hammering this past election across the board. We want your opinion on what worked – on the national, state and local levels. We also want to know what didn't work. Then finally what should change for Republicans – to appeal to more people. To convince those that are on the edge to look to conservative ideas and ideals.

The hammering that the party took ends with this election. We need to learn from what happened with this election so that it does not happen again. Republicans need to market themselves better. We want your thoughts.

Please comment here or email us at RepubliCANofME@gmail.com

There is a little over 1400 days until the next election.

Sage advice from the leader of one of the greatest leaders in history - Cicero of Rome

The budget should be balanced,
the treasury should be refilled,
public debt should be reduced,
and the assistance to foreign lands
should be curtailed
lest Rome become bankrupt.
People must again learn to work,
instead of living on public assistance.

What do we know about District 49 Candidate Jeff Evangelos?

We know that Jeff likes a quote from Mark Twain “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything”. We know that Jeff likes the character Atticus Finch from the movie “To Kill a Mocking Bird” and that his favorite leaders are Dwight Eisenhower and John F Kennedy. Beyond that we really do not know all that much about this candidate running for District 49. Is this what makes a good candidate? I think voters would much rather know that a candidate will do something for them. Like education reforms, limiting government intervention and helping to promote new job growth to name a few of the concerns that voters are dealing with. There is no disputing that Jeff Evangelos has an impressive resume of accomplishments and had a business. As one supporter noted Jeff is a “wicked smart guy”. There is a concern as to what he stands for and if he has a clear understanding of what the current issues that are important. Is Jeff the candidate you should vote for? Well if you are a voter concerned with quotes, movie characters and nifty Red Sox or Patriots schedules - sure. Otherwise look to a candidate who actually stands for something.

Washington Post Speaks of the Future and President Obama

By Matt Patterson (columnist - Washington Post, New York Post, San Francisco Examiner)

Years from now, historians may regard the 2008 election of Barack Obama as an inscrutable and disturbing phenomenon, the result of a baffling breed of mass hysteria akin perhaps to the witch craze of the Middle Ages. How, they will wonder, did a man so devoid of professional accomplishment beguile so many into thinking he could manage the world's largest economy, direct the world's most powerful military, execute the world's most consequential job? Imagine a future historian examining Obama's pre-presidential life: ushered into and through the Ivy League despite unremarkable grades and test scores along the way; a cushy non-job as a "community organizer"; a brief career as a state legislator devoid of legislative achievement (and in fact nearly devoid of his attention, so often did he vote "present"); and finally an unaccomplished single term in the United States Senate, the entirety of which was devoted to his presidential ambitions.

He left no academic legacy in academia, authored no signature legislation as a legislator. And then there is the matter of his troubling associations: the white-hating, America-loathing preacher who for decades served as Obama's "spiritual mentor"; a real-life, actual terrorist who served as Obama's colleague and political sponsor. It is easy to imagine a future historian looking at it all and asking: how on Earth was such a man elected president?

Not content to wait for history, the incomparable Norman Podhoretz addressed the question recently in the Wall Street Journal: To be sure, no white candidate who had close associations with an outspoken hater of America like Jeremiah Wright and an unrepentant terrorist like Bill Ayers, would have lasted a single day. But because Mr. Obama was black, and therefore entitled in the eyes of liberal Dom to have hung out with protesters against various American injustices, even if they were a bit extreme, he was given a pass. Let that sink in: Obama was given a pass - held to a lower standard - because of the color of his skin.
Podhoretz continues: And in any case, what did such ancient history matter when he was also so articulate and elegant and (as he himself had said) "non-threatening," all of which gave him a fighting chance to become the first black president and thereby to lay the curse of racism to rest?

Podhoretz puts his finger, I think, on the animating pulse of the Obama phenomenon - affirmative action. Not in the legal sense, of course. But certainly in the motivating sentiment behind all affirmative action laws and regulations, which are designed primarily to make white people, and especially white liberals, feel good about themselves.

Unfortunately, minorities often suffer so that whites can pat themselves on the back. Liberals routinely admit minorities to schools for which they are not qualified, yet take no responsibility for the inevitable poor performance and high drop-out rates which follow. Liberals don't care if these minority students fail; liberals aren't around to witness the emotional devastation and deflated self-esteem resulting from the racist policy that is affirmative action. Yes, racist. Holding someone to a separate standard merely because of the color of his skin - that's affirmative action in a nutshell, and if that isn't racism, then nothing is.

And that is what America did to Obama. True, Obama himself was never troubled by his lack of achievements, but why would he be? As many have noted, Obama was told he was good enough for Columbia despite undistinguished grades at Occidental; he was told he was good enough for the US Senate despite a mediocre record in Illinois; he was told he was good enough to be president despite no record at all in the Senate. All his life, every step of the way, Obama was told he was good enough for the next step, in spite of ample evidence to the contrary.

What could this breed if not the sort of empty narcissism on display every time Obama speaks? In 2008, many who agreed that he lacked executive qualifications nonetheless raved about Obama's oratory skills, intellect, and cool character. Those people - conservatives included - ought now to be deeply embarrassed.
The man thinks and speaks in the hoariest of clichés, and that's when he has his Teleprompters in front of him; when the prompter is absent he can barely think or speak at all. Not one original idea has ever issued from his mouth - it's all warmed-over Marxism of the kind that has failed over and over again for 100 years.
And what about his character? Obama is constantly blaming anything and everything else for his troubles. Bush did it; it was bad luck; I inherited this mess. It is embarrassing to see a president so willing to advertise his own powerlessness, so comfortable with his own incompetence. But really, what were we to expect? The man has never been responsible for anything, so how do we expect him to act responsibly?

In short: our president is a small and small-minded man, with neither the temperament nor the intellect to handle his job. When you understand that, and only when you understand that, will the current erosion of liberty and prosperity make sense. It could not have gone otherwise with such a man in the Oval Office.

On the Campaign trail with Chris Rector

Last night Vianlhaven had a candidate forum in which both Chris Rector and Ed Mazurek participated. Chris Rector managed to do better than hold his own in this traditionally Democrat stronghold. This forum should be considered a "win" for Chris.

Tonight there is a forum sponsored by the Union Chamber of Commerce. There is a pot luck dinner from 5:30 - 6:30 and the forum starts at 6:30. We do not know what the format will be. Other Republicans of note who will be there are Les Fossel (Senate dist 20), Jethro Pease (House dist. 44), Bob Carter (House dist. 49) and Deb Sanderson (House dist. 52). Please come out and support these candidates.

Tomorrow (October 12) Chris Rector will find himself in Augusta. He will be co-chairing the Maine Economic Growth Council. This should should keep him occupied until the afternoon. Later in the afternoon expect to find Chris knocking on doors in the Rockport or Camden area.

Saturday (October 13) expect to find Chris Rector greeting the guests visiting from the cruise ship visiting Rockland that day. The afternoon will find Chris Rector in Thomaston as part of an Historical tour of the Thomaston Cemetery with the Thomaston Historical Society. Chris will be reading some information about notable citizens buried there.

Jon Courtney's Campaign against Chellie

Jon Courtney is going to unseat US Rep. Chellie Pingree in Maine's 1st Congressional District come November. Jon's campaign has purchased airtime on a variety of cable tv stations.

View his TV spot: Jon Courtney

The idea is to get name recognition for Jon and give a little bio about him to the public. Jon has numerous accomplishments that the public may not be aware of. “We want to get the message out” according to Keith Herrick – Jon's campaign manager.

“We passed every major reform with bipartisan cooperation,” Courtney says in the ad. “Regulatory, welfare, health insurance and pension reform. We reduced debt, all while protecting our most vulnerable and keeping our promises to seniors.”

Courtney is running a hard campaign with Chellie who has raised more campaign funds than Jon. Pingree currently has a slight edge over Courtney in the polls.

Jon and his supporters are out every day knocking on doors and letting people know what Jon stands for – Jon is a man of principles, values and ethics. Jon has and continues to fight for the independence of families rather than dependence. Jon wants to earn your vote and not buy it as his opponent is doing. National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) endorses Kevin Raye

Yesterday Kevin Raye was endorsed by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). The NFIB represents over 3,500 small businesses across Maine. Mary Sullivan pointed out that NFIB supports candidates that can get the job done. Like Charlie Summers. Or the comment by  Paul Tormey pointed out that Rep. Michaud has an abysmal rating from the NFIB. Show your support for what Kevin Raye is doing. Like Kevin on Facebook or visit his web page. Get involved and help Kevin help you, help us.

Charlie Summers calls out Cynthia Dill

Today Charlie Summers called on Cynthia Dill (D- Cape Elizabeth) to denounce comments that were made earlier this week by Rep. Paul Gilbert (D- Jay). The comments by Rep. Paul Gilbert were made during a confirmation hearing for the nomination of Christopher Pierce to the Finance  Authority of Maine. Rep. Paul Gilbert repeatedly played down the service that Christopher Pierce gave to this country. Rep. Paul Gilbert feels that Christopher Pierce  and his service with the National Guard “was not considered qualification for veteran's status”. You see Charlie Summers is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and knows what our men and women at arms have to go through both on and off the battle field. The comments made by Rep. Gilbert were not only disrespectful towards those who put their lives on the line for this country. His comments also show the lack of awareness of those who serve our country. Senator Dill has been silent on the issues. This speaks volumes on her character and values. Support Charlie Summers. Like Charlie Summers on Facebook.

A question from Tim Turner to the voting public?

Tim Turner: “The question Nov 6th is do you believe that the governments power is more important then the civil liberty's and rights of the individual? The 2 can't coexist.” Many would believe that governments power is more important than an individuals freedom. Republicans like Tim Turner are for advancement of the civil liberties and the rights of individuals. Find out more about Tim's campaign in District 94. Like him on Facebook.

Catching up with Tim Turner in District 94

Tim Turner was spotted at the Buckfield parade and then the community day celebration afterwords this past weekend. Tim commented that the biggest problem he has in running for office is that he would prefer taking more time talking with people. The quick handshake is just not satisfying. Darren Tripp commented that people who know Tim “appreciate the quick handshake and smile” or as Dannie Abbott pointed out that we know the intent “and need not the handshake or smile to know”. Get to know Tim Turner who is running for office in district 94. He is a man of the people and for the people. Give Tim the support to elect and send him to Augusta. Like Tim on Facebook. Charlie Summers is highlighted in new ads on reform and service

Starting tomorrow September 5 Charlie Summers begins a television campaign which introduces the candidate to Maine voters. As Maine GOP spokesman David Sorensen points out “The Summers campaign is building momentum daily”. See Charlie's video “Meet CharlieSummers.”

The future of Maine's families is for Independence – from Government.

The Republican party is in a race with the other party to change the way we think about assistance for families in need. Jon Courtney pointed out at the Rotary Club in Wells that he and other Republicans worked on tailoring a plan to help people get off of state assistance. Government assistance should be available to help as a safety net. It should not be a way of life.

Government should be there to offer assistance when a family is in need. It should tailor that assistance though so that the person or family has a goal of independence – not dependence on that assistance. We want to present you three scenarios of people or families receiving assistance or who have tried:
  • A late 30's woman who has been receiving government assistance for over 15 years now. The dollar value of assistance currently is in excess of $36,000.  She is voting for the current President because she does not want to loose any assistance. This person has no disability but knows the system well enough to live a very comfortable life paid for by those that do work.
  • A late 20's man who is 'disabled' by anxiety and has been 'disabled' for more than 5 years. This gentleman lives his life filled with 'anxiety' that is so disabling that he can not work at any normal job of any kind. He refuses to seek any help that may assist him in overcome this disabling anxiety and help him become a productive member of society. This gentleman currently spends his days drinking vodka and playing video games. This life style is paid for by all of us still working. Is the state really helping this young man? This man by the way is voting for the current President because he does not want to lose his current entitlements.
The example presented represents what is wrong with the current system. What is supposed to be a safety net has turned into a way of life and one that is quite comfortable. Why would anyone want to give up on a situation where everything is taken care of for you? At some point if enough people opt for a lifestyle where the government takes care of you there won't be enough people to cover the cost. In our final example we see someone who probably should have help of some sort but cannot because she earns too much.
  • A young woman who is 18 recently applied for assistance. She is a single Mom with a 15 month old child. She works full time at a fast food restaurant earning $7.50 and hour and working no more than 39 hours.  Her earnings come to $1170 a month which is considered too much to receive much of any kind of assistance other than food stamps (currently $122.00 per month). When this woman went to DHHS for help for child care and rental assistance she was told that she made too much money at $14,000 a year. She was told by DHHS that if she quit her job she would be entitled to more benefits. The benefits would exceed her yearly income and provide her with a home, child care and TANIF. This woman has declined the advice of DHHS and continues working.

Here we are presented again with what is wrong with a system that is supposed to help to offer a safety net to those that are in need. In the examples presented we see a system that is broken. A system that creates and encourages dependence instead of independence. Show your support for the Republican candidate in your district. Success should be how many people are not on public assistance not by how many are on assistance.
